CHARLES GINNEVER

Charles Ginnever sculpture Crete at Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis

About

An internationally recognized artist, Charles Ginnever initially trained under Ossip Zadkine in the early 50’s at the Acedémie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. He completed his artistic training in 1959 with a Masters in Fine Arts from Cornell University. Ginnever’s prolific career spans over six decades, and from his earliest works to his last he consistently challenged viewers’ notions of perspective, both Western and Non-Western.

Ginnever’s early break-throughs in sculpture were influenced by the Abstract Expressionists, with pieces created from found railroad ties incorporated with scraps of found bent steel, freeing his forms from the base with work that jutted into space. Some of these pieces were included in the influential exhibition at the Martha Jackson Gallery, “New Forms, New Media” in 1960. These works then gave way to pieces primarily composed of found steel scraps that he welded together, sometimes incorporating canvas, which were then painted to accentuate the push and pull of their sculptural forms.

In 1964, Ginnever created “Dante’s Rig”, prefiguring much of his mature work. The piece, according to Carol Squiers, “explored non-western art ideas, especially about perspective," and it foreshadowed his interest in “forced illusory perspective”. It was this interest in perspective that has been the dominant characteristic of Ginnever’s oeuvre ever since.

Ginnever’s mature works, dating from the mid 60’s until his death in 2019, are rooted in the tradition of large-scale welded steel sculpture that dominated much of the latter half of the 20th century. Ginnever has exhibited widely over his long career in prestigious galleries and museums around the world. His work can be found in many private as well as public collections and sculpture parks around the country, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Walker Art Center, Storm King and The Smithsonian.
